10 Dating Truths You Can't Ignore

Sure, every guy is different, but when you've gone out with enough of them (and, ahem, we have) you start to see some patterns.

image
Truth #1

You'll regret that "Just wanted to make sure you got my last message" follow-up to an e-mail, text, or voicemail.

image
Truth #2

If you don't feel comfortable having a conversation with a guy about sex — especially condoms — you shouldn't be getting busy with him.

image
Truth #3

If a man breaks up with you out of the blue, the out-of-the-blue part is really only on your end.

image
Truth #4

Just as it's best to wait to drop the L-bomb until your man does, let a guy change his Facebook status to "in a relationship" before you do.

image
Truth #5

No woman in a healthy long-term relationship has ever said, "Gee, I really wish I'd slept with my man sooner."

image
Truth #6

Keeping a change of clothes at work in case of an emergency walk of shame isn't optimistic behavior...it's career-savvy.

image
Truth #7

When a guy repeatedly refers to his exes as "crazy," "psycho," or "sluts," he will use those same words against you one day.

image
Truth #8

If a relationship feels like too much work after the first month, it'll be 10 times harder a year from now.

image
Truth #9

A guy who rates you or other girls as a number from 1 to 10 is a loser, even if he gives you a 10. You're a woman, not county fair livestock.

image
Truth #10

A guy who talks about how skilled he is in the sack is like a man who brags about his money. Either way, he ain't got it. The kind of man you want to be with knows that actions speak louder than words. And thankfully, there are plenty of those types out there!

Put More Bliss in Your Kiss

image How can you become a make-out maestra so masterful he'll be moaning for more? Expertly mouthing off isn't just a matter of puckering up and planting a wet one. A fabulous kiss is an intricate balancing act involving tongue technique, pressure control, and moistness monitoring. Here, real guys and lip-service pros spill their best smooching secrets so you can mesmerize him when you go mouth-to-mouth.

Your first step toward a mind-blowing kiss: Establish great chemistry. "When you're talking to a guy, if you're dying to touch him, taste him, feel his body heat, you know you're attracted,

Once you know the attraction is mutual, invade his space with a tantalizing kiss-me telegram. That's what works for Kristy Cunningham. "I make tempting 'innocent' body contact with a new man so that he knows subconsciously that I want to get physical," says the 25-year-old real estate agent in Indianapolis. "It creates such sexual sparks that when we finally do kiss, it's like lightning striking."

Or if lip-licking vixen is more your style, get orally erotic with the way you eat. "I love to watch my girlfriend savor a meal," admits Sam Kilmore, a 28-year-old musician in New York City. "Watching her sensual lips and mouth relish the flavor drives me wild — I can't wait for her to devour me the same way."

Everyone has their pecking preferences. And as most of us already know, forcing yours on an unwitting partner can instantly make him kisstory.

Most women, he says, prefer light, feathery kisses. So if you want a make-out session that's mutually satisfying, you have to give in — at times — to each other's personal tastes.

"To clue a woman in to what I want in a kiss, I'll smooch her the way I want to be smooched back.Being a gold medalist in the mouth-to-mouth event will turn any man to passion putty. "Honestly, who just wants to be good? You want to be orally outstanding," says Ava Cadell, PhD, a clinical sexologist in Los Angeles. She devised the following take-his-pout-prisoner plan: First, kiss your lover's face all over. Start out with dry, baby pecks on his eyebrows, chin, and cheeks. Then, trace the outline of your lover's lips with the tip of your tongue. When you get to his mouth, don't dive in; instead, slowly exert a little more pressure. Entice him by pulling back and sucking gently on his bottom lip. Finally, go in for a kiss, this time with a lot of wetness to increase the sexual excitement. "And don't forget to employ your hands in the make-out mission by caressing his hair, face, thighs, and buttocks," reminds Cadell. "Men absolutely love it when women take control of the kiss.

Men like to be kissed top-to-bottom, front-to-back, and side-to-side. So go ahead and explore his whole body, experimenting with pressure, wetness, and tongue techniques. "I go absolutely crazy when my neck is kissed roughly," admits John McNally, 24, a grad student in Dallas.
"Observe his responses to see what he likes most," says sex surrogate Cohen Greene. "If he stiffens up or seems ticklish when you're kissing a certain spot, move on. To each his own erotic zone.

But if you're not sure where to start your ecstatic expedition, begin with Cohen Greene's round-his-world kiss: Gently flip his nipples with your tongue and kiss down his body into his pubic zone. Nuzzle your nose in his genitals; then kiss the insides of his thighs. Then, work your way up to his penis, and kiss it with pressure. Move back to his inner thighs, voyage down his legs.

Just don't be surprised if, in response to your global warming, he sends you to a totally uncharted sexual stratosphere.

Sex Detective !

You can glean a ton about a guy's libido and reproductive health just by eyeballing him.
image

A guy may talk a big game and wear jeans that are tighter than Adam Levine's, but that doesn't mean he has what it takes to keep up with you in the sack...or get you knocked up when you're ready. The real signs of a highly sexual male are a lot more subtle and surprising. According to urologist Harry Fisch, the following six traits and behaviors indicate that a man is truly made for action.

He's Trim Around the Middle

You've no doubt heard that a dude with a gut is more likely to keel over from a heart attack later in life, but it's also a bad sign in the sexual realm. Testosterone is broken down more quickly in belly fat. So that big stomach? It's literally sucking him dry of the stuff.

"Testosterone is the gas that drives the car," Dr. Fisch says. "If it's low, he's going to be low on gas. He'll be tired, he's not going to be able to exercise very much, he's less likely to be in the mood, and his fertility will be lower because a guy needs a certain level of testosterone to produce sperm."

Waist size is especially a concern if your guy is over 30, when metabolism slows and testosterone levels decrease by about 1 percent each year.

He's Got Guns

If a great sex life is high on your list of priorities, find a guy who's trim and jacked. "Someone who regularly works out and lifts weights is likely to have a higher libido," says Dr. Fisch. That's because the body needs testosterone to build muscle mass, so if he has Mario Lopez-like biceps, he usually has more of the hormone. You can't say the same for men who are "skinny fat" — you know, the tall, thin guy who has a body like a noodle. "If he's too scrawny, he's not going to have a lot of testosterone or a strong sex drive," Dr. Fisch says. "Unfortunately, working out can only boost a guy's testosterone levels to a point, and some men will never build big muscles because they don't have high enough levels."

He Parties Smart

Smoking and heavy drinking have the same effect on a guy's mojo as a Rosie O'Donnell striptease. "Smoking constricts blood vessels, which means there's less blood flowing to his penis," Dr. Fisch says. This may cause him to have problems getting — and maintaining — an erection. Downing more than three drinks also can leave him limp because alcohol is a central-nervous-system depressant, which once again, limits blood flow to his penis. So a guy who knocks back lots of cocktails? He's probably not going to be the life of the party in bed.

His Testicles Are in Top Shape

You can learn even more about a guy's long-term sexual potential once his pants are off. First, check out his testicles: Each should be the size of a walnut, says Dr. Fisch, and they should be nearly equal, though small differences are normal. If one is considerably smaller — say, the size of a cherry — then that's a fertility red flag. Around 95 percent of a testicle is made up of sperm-producing cells, and 5 percent is made up of testosterone-producing cells. A smaller testicle makes for a smaller sperm factory.

While you're feeling around down there, note how heated his boys get. "If his testicles run hot, it could be due to a group of pronounced veins in the scrotum, called a varicocele," says Dr. Fisch. "These veins are filled with warm blood, and the extra heat reduces sperm count." A varicocele can be flat or raised and can look similar to a group of varicose veins in the legs. To find out for sure if he has one, cup his balls and firmly — but gently — run your thumb along the scrotal skin, being careful to check for raised portions or lumps (which may feel like coiled string).

He Has Stellar Semen

You can glean a lot from the volume, clarity, and taste of a man's semen. A guy's ejaculate should be about half a teaspoon. If he's producing less, it could mean he's been ejaculating a lot from sex or masturbation or that he has an infection or blockage of the ejaculatory ducts, Dr. Fisch says.

Semen is mostly fluid, but about 1 percent of it is sperm, which is what gives it a cloudy appearance. If you notice a man's ejaculate has a watery consistency instead of a creamy one, he likely has a low sperm count and he may have difficulty fathering kids. As for taste, "a guy's semen is a mixture of fluid that contains sugar — fructose — from the seminal vesicles and a salty taste from the prostate," Dr. Fisch says. If a man is having sex or masturbating frequently, as in every day or several times a day, he's going to deplete the fructose-containing fluid, so his semen will taste saltier. If he hasn't ejaculated in a while, it's going to be sweeter.

He Takes Just Long Enough

You don't need a PhD to know that a guy who comes too fast can put a damper on your sex life (anything less than 2 minutes is considered premature ejaculation). But a man who takes forever to peak despite being hard also may be cause for concern. For one, he may be giving himself a hand too often. "Some men masturbate so much that they know their trigger points and it becomes more difficult for them to come inside a woman," Dr. Fisch says. It could also indicate that he's on an antidepressant or anti-anxiety medication, which can cause prolonged ejaculation.

Biggest Guy Sex Myths

We felt compelled to clear up some misconceptions.

  • Despite common belief, the size of a man's hands and feet has nothing to do with the size of his penis.
  • If a guy is big all around — say, he's a 6-foot-4 football player — that doesn't mean he's going to have a humdinger of a hummer. And a small guy could be very well hung.
  • A veiny penis does not indicate that a guy has a problem. In fact, it's totally normal.
  • Hairiness has zero correlation with virility. Men with hairy chests are genetically predisposed to it — it has nothing to do with testosterone. Similarly, if a guy is balding, it's not a sign that his libido will be lacking. In some cases, it actually may suggest that he has more testosterone.
  • Not every man masturbates regularly. About 5 percent of the male population doesn't do it.

9 Things You Don't Know About Kissing

Want to make your smooches even hotter or just learn some fun facts? Read on for these kissing tips...

1. There are tons of nerve endings ...
… in your lips (100 times more than in your fingertips!) that stimulate desire. That's why smooching before, during, and after sex can be extremely arousing and satisfying.

2. Pay attention to those "See ya later" pecks. If your guy ...
… routinely only gives you a quick kiss on the cheek when saying good-bye, it could be that he's guarded and doesn't emote easily. If this is a more recent development, it's a warning sign; he may be feeling ambivalent about the relationship.

3. Forty percent of men say that ...
… a really long, steamy kiss will get them immediately ready to head to the bedroom. (Thirty percent said that grabbing their crotch will do it. Duh.)

4. Instantly turn up the kissing intimacy by ...
… closing the "A-frame": a smooching stance in which you and your guy are in the middle of a smooch but your hips are a mile apart. By pressing your hips together, the degree of desire quickly rises.

5. The best way to kiss a guy's ear? Kiss and ...
… suck on his earlobe for a moment and then trace the outline of his ear with the tip of your tongue. (Bonus points if you whisper something naughty to him.)

6. Men initiate open-mouth kissing to transfer ...
… libido-boosting testosterone to their partner. So when he's getting a little more aggressive, it's not just about his desire — he wants you to be a bit more amorous too.

7. Men are more than twice as likely ...
… to sleep with a bad kisser than are women.

8. Fifty-four percent of women ...
… between the ages of 18 and 24 say they've kissed another girl. That number drops to 43 percent for those between 25 and 34.

9. During the Middle Ages, people signed legal contracts ...
… by making an "X" on the document and then kissing it to pledge their honor. That's how XX became shorthand for a smooch.

Bulkier Actor/Actresses

image Jackman, who began training a full year before shooting began, would often begin his day at 4 a.m. with a breakfast of a whole chicken (tasty!) or egg whites and toast (no butter or jam and any other yummy toppings, of course). "[I] wiped out entire gene pools of chickens," he joked of his copious protein consumption. "To any vegetarians out there, I really apologize." The reigning Sexiest Man Alive ate every three hours and put away an estimated 4,500 calories a day. His disciplined diet was combined with explosive-impact weight training (he could bench press an impressive 300 to 320 pounds), all of which turned his body into a bulging mass of eye-popping pecs and bazooka-sized guns.

image Talk about commitment to physical fitness. Sarah Connor didn't let being locked in the loony bin stop her from shaping up for Armageddon, as evidenced by the film's establishing shot of her doing pull-ups on an upturned bed frame, her mighty biceps glistening with sweat. To get into mesomorphic mama-bear-meets-warrior mode, Hamilton first had to say "hasta la vista" to her post-pregnancy pounds. Three months before shooting began, she started six-day-a-week, three-hour-a-day training sessions that had her sweating from running, swimming, biking, stair-climbing, lunges, weight lifting, judo, and some quality mini-trampoline time. She dropped a dozen pounds while adding enough muscle mass to pump a shotgun with one arm, a feat helped along by a rigid diet consisting of a lot of chicken and salads (no dressing, natch). "You couldn't stop me from working out," Hamilton told MTV News. "I remember I had a tiny piece of cheese one day and thought I had blown everything. It was literally the only cheese I had in nine months."

image To achieve his character's physical perfection, Bale adopted what he described as an "incredibly boring" diet, shoveling down plenty of protein and vegetables and gorging on carbs such as bread, rice and pasta in order to build body mass. His exhausting workout regimen ranged from running and weight training to yoga, boxing and stretching. Not that the actor would recommend trying to duplicate Bateman's chiseled physique. "You can't have a body like that if you want to have a life," said Bale, "or any meaningful relationships."

image Demi prepared for the grueling on-screen physical trials (running obstacle courses, crawling through mud and sand, rolling oil drums, carrying life rafts, and enduring push-ups in the freezing surf) by going through her own real-life version of SEAL Hell Week. Her boot camp-inspired daily routine consisted of running, swimming, obstacle-course tests and endless push-ups, sit-ups and squats.

image Unlike Pitt's lean cut of bruised beefcake look from "Fight Club" five years before, his brawny bod in "Troy" is a gift straight from Mount Olympus. The A-lister reportedly requested a toga-dropping nude scene in the sprawling flick, which seems like a reasonable request considering he was feeling the burn six days a week for eight months leading up to the start of production. The star achieved Hellenic hunkiness with weights (a gym and trainer came with him on location to Malta and Mexico), yoga, running and sword training, along with balance training on a seesaw board, medicine ball hoisting and various one-legged exercises. In between, Brad refreshed with vitamin-rich protein shakes and daily massages.

image Smith went from slim to solid by gaining more than 30 pounds of muscle over the course of a year. He got ring-ready by kick-starting his day with a run before segueing into boxing practice and weight training (at his peak, he was able to bench press 300 pounds). By the time cameras rolled, he had completed his metamorphosis into a well-built, Ali-like wall of 220 pounds.

image "Only the hard and only the strong may call themselves Spartans." So says Leonidas, a line Butler apparently took to heart by training unremittingly for four months. Not only did he work with both a Venezuelan bodybuilder ("I wanted to look really strong," Butler told Men's Health), but he also got into character both physically and mentally with something called the 300-rep Spartan workout, which required him to do -- without a rest -- 50 pull-ups (25 at a time), 50 push-ups, 50 dead-lifts (135 pounds at a time), 50 jumps on a 24-inch box, 50 floor-wipers (lie on your back, lift a barbell and touch it on the left and right with your legs) and 50 "single-arm clean-and-presses using a 36-pound kettle bell." We have no idea what that last one is, but it sure sounds backbreaking. Toss in some tire flipping and gymnastics-inspired ring-training, and Butler ended up with a powerful body that was royally ripped.

image It takes a lot of work to fill out 007's Speedo and tuxedo. For six months, Craig spent six days a week on an exhausting regimen that ranged from pull-ups and push-ups to squats and dips. He also spent a lot of time with a dumbbell in his hand, with endless lateral raises responsible for those sigh-worthy broad shoulders. But the tough training was necessary to play the lady-killer with a license to kill. "I had black eyes, I had cuts, I was bruised, I had muscle strains, and I took a lot of painkillers," said the actor. "But it was part of the job."

image The big moment when Peter takes off his shirt and we see that his once-puny body is now bulging with muscles was accomplished through six months of six-day-a-week training sessions, some lasting up to four hours. The actor's intensive workouts focused on weight-lifting, running, cycling, yoga, gymnastics, and martial arts. Maguire, a vegetarian, also partnered with a nutritionist and ate four to six times a day to bulk up.

image Underneath that iron suit, Tony Stark was rocking some abs and buns of steel. Downey got buff for what would be his comeback role by undertaking strenuous daily workouts to pack on more than 20 pounds of muscle in five months. The catch? The Iron Man suit couldn't be altered, so the star had to be careful not to get too beefy. His trainer, Brad Bose, used various exercise machines (Jacob's Ladder, The Pineapple) to work every muscle group and build strength but not bulk, which fit in with his superpower-free character. "They wanted someone unique," explained Bose. "His character is an alcoholic and a womanizer, and he's an arms dealer. They didn't want a six-pack or bulging muscles, but they wanted to see that he had the power to forge iron."

image Verisimilitude-devoted De Niro, who had previously put on 60 pounds for "Raging Bull" and 30 pounds for "The Untouchables," whittled his body fat down to just four percent to play Cady, gaining muscle with a combination of weight-lifting and a carb-crammed diet. "I feel if you're going to do certain parts," the actor told Time, "you really have to commit to them all the way to make them special."

image Audiences won't get to see Gyllenhaal in his pumped-up state until May 2010, but, judging by the trailer, the wait will be worth it. "I guess I've gotten buff," he downplayed to "Entertainment Tonight" during filming. "There's a lot of acrobatics in the movie -- a lot of running up walls, and jumping on things and parkour [basically, running full-speed at an object and bouncing off it]. So it requires muscularity, but it requires a lot of aerobic ability, too." The actor's training reportedly included wearing a 20-pound jacket while running and doing uphill sprints followed by sit-ups upon reaching the top (we got winded just typing that).

image Faced with his own moment of career redemption, Rourke was willing to do whatever it took to sell the role. That included performing many of his own stunts, from the rope dives to slicing open his much-altered face with a razor blade. Mickey went for maximum authenticity by spending months getting put through his paces with a former Israeli cage fighter and supplementing breakfast, lunch and dinner with four other meals, all of which helped him put on 46 pounds of muscle. As for whether he got deep enough into character to add heft with steroids or human growth hormones, he coyly told Men's Journal, "When I'm a wrestler, I behave like a wrestler."

image Before "Blade," Reynolds was better known for his frat boyish charms in "Van Wilder" than his body, and he made a beeline for the gym as soon as he landed the vampire flick. He filled out by gaining 25 pounds of muscle and got chiseled by getting down to just 3 percent body fat. Every day, he did a dizzying 500-1,000 sit-ups, along with weight training and a diet heavy on oatmeal, protein bars, chicken and eggs. "All told, it was about seven months of just every day living like a complete fool, living in the gym and eating a diet that is scientific basically," explained the actor, whose reshaped body probably didn't hurt when he was wooing now-wife Scarlett Johansson (or when he was preparing for "Wolverine"). "I put on a lot of weight. I ate every two hours. All day, every day. I'd even wake up in the middle of the night and eat," he said. "The biggest challenge was having to gain all that weight and spend all my time in the gym. That was something that I'd never done before. That nearly broke me."

image Travolta was able to carve his body into primo dancer condition thanks to the film's director, Sylvester Stallone, a guy who knows muscles. Sly helped devise a plan that had Travolta working out six days a week for nearly five months (14- and 16-hour gym days were not uncommon). The actor lost 20 pounds and gained a sleek, muscular build that he called "more contemporary and sexier."

What It's Like Dating a Babe

Of course, looks are important. But just how great is it to date a woman who turns heads everywhere she goes?

I'd like to say that the moment I met Lisa, I knew we'd be together. But really, all I thought when a mutual friend introduced us at a bar was: "She's absolutely beautiful. And way outside my league." We're talking swimming-pool-sized, almond-shaped eyes, flawless skin, the kind of hair you see in a shampoo ad, perfect curves... everything. Cupid must have owed me one, because that night, our friendly conversation turned into kissing. After a few weeks, kissing turned into a real live relationship.

And that's when my love life became a rollercoaster ride. I never expected the highs and lows that go along with dating a hot girl, but read on as I spell them out. Hopefully, they'll help you be prepared if it's your turn to date an incredibly gorgeous woman.

The good: Pretty things are fun to show off
Remember getting an awesome toy for Christmas and feeling desperate to bring it to school to show it off? Dating a stunner isn't much different. I think I've introduced Lisa to more friends than I knew I had. And lo, the whispers of "She's beautiful" from the ladies and "Nice job, my man," from the boys have rained down like songs from the angels. My only disappointment? Not having a high school reunion scheduled for years.
The bad: Pretty things aren't so fun to show off to strangers
On the other hand, that positive attention is painful when I don't trust the person -- er, guy -- who's giving it. Going out with Lisa is like carrying a thick t-bone, and there are wolves in button-down shirts everywhere, ready to pounce. Just as I convince myself I'm being paranoid, some Drakkar-scented predator slinks out of the shadows and starts putting the moves on her. An arm around her waist and a kiss on her cheek usually gets rid of him, but by then, all I want to do is whisk her away to the safety of my apartment. I never thought of myself as jealous, but Lisa has brought out my heretofore latent "protective" side -- which isn't always so pretty.

The good: Snagging a beauty breeds confidence
Never underestimate the ego boost that comes from having a lovely lady on your arm. Just knowing Lisa was my girlfriend made me feel more powerful. I attacked projects at work with more gusto, had more energy during my pickup basketball games, and even started using a pen on the Sunday New York Times crossword. Seriously.

The bad: Relationship doubts are even more severe than usual
Self-doubt can crop up when you're dating anyone, right? Well, that sentiment becomes even harder to fend off when you feel like the person you're dating is somehow better than you. With girls before, I'd wondered, "Why is she really going out with me?" but with Lisa, I asked myself for the first time, "Why would a woman as beautiful as Lisa want to be with me at all?" I'd perceived an imbalance in the relationship that messed with my emotions.

The good: She's the key to the town
Really, what can't a beautiful woman get? A coy smile from her in the right direction and suddenly I'm through the velvet ropes, sitting at the best table in the restaurant, or -- in one prime example of how beauty can tame a beast -- escaping legal persecution. On our first romantic getaway, I was pulled over for speeding. Somehow Lisa, all batting eyes and cooing voice in her Australian lilt (sigh), convinced the cop who was lecturing me that my infraction was her fault and that she was truly, deeply sorry. In the end, the officer gave me a warning and told me to consider myself lucky. I do, and not just for getting out of the ticket.

The bad: You start to forget that you're great, too
The perks, the attention, the self-gratification -- I started wondering how I could have been happy in a relationship without them... or if I was worth any of it on my own. But then I introduced Lisa to a friend who wistfully recounted dating a gorgeous girl in college for a long time. Too long, he explained. They weren't a good match, but he didn't end the relationship because he figured he'd never date another perfect ten. It was a cautionary tale that made me wonder: Was I suffering from "I'll Never Do Better" syndrome? A few times, when fights were brewing, I considered staying silent -- she's so darn good-looking that I was tempted to overlook anything. I had to have confidence in our relationship before I realized that if we were really going to be together, we'd have to talk as equals. And that's not always so easy to do in the moment.

The good: You realize looks aren't what matter
I've been with Lisa for over a year now, and I can honestly say that I'm with her because she's the right person for me -- not because she fulfills a fantasy. After all, she's pretty, but it's not like she's curing cancer, you know? Just kidding: She actually has a Ph.D. in genetic research and is working for a leukemia specialist (true story). And that's my point -- now I'm confident that I'm with her for all the right reasons, like our shared sense of humor, her astounding intelligence, her beautiful laugh.

It wasn't easy, but I took her down from the mental perch I'd placed her on. That restored equilibrium to the relationship, and now I feel confident that she wants to be with me. I still hate to see guys try to hit on her, but I can't blame them. If I were single and met this drop-dead perfect specimen, I'd do the same thing all over again.

New Divide by Linkin Park

Inside 2
I remembered black skies
The lightning all around me
I remembered each flash
As time began to blur
Like a startling sign
That fate had finally found me
And your voice was all I heard
That I get what I deserve

So give me reason to prove me wrong
To wash this memory clean
Let the thoughts cross the distance in your eyes
Give me reason to fill this hole
Connect the space between
Let it be enough to reach the truth that lies
Across this new divide

There was nothing in sight
But memories left abandoned
There was nowhere to hide
The ashes fell like snow
And the ground caved in
Between where we were standing
And your voice was all I heard
That I get what I deserve

So give me reason to prove me wrong
To wash this memory clean
Let the thoughts cross the distance in your eyes
Across this new divide

In every loss in every lie
In every truth that you'd deny
And each regret and each goodbye
Was a mistake too great to hide
And your voice was all I heard
That I get what I deserve

So give me reason to prove me wrong
To wash this memory clean
Let the thoughts cross the distance in your eyes
Give me reason to fill this hole
Connect the space between
Let it be enough to reach the truth that lies
Across this new divide
Across this new divide

Real seeks deal with ADIDAS

Real Madrid have asked sponsor ADIDAS to double up to 60 million euros the amount it pays the club annually, in view of their signing of a host of new stars.

Real’s new president Florentino Perez is seeking the renegotiation of its contract with the German Sporting goods Giant, which runs until 2012.

It said a refusal by ADIDAS, which produces and sells the club’s shirts could push Real to take its business to the company’s rival US based NIKE.

Besides ADIDAS, Real has several other sponsors, including Coca-Cola, Audi, Bwin, and Telefonica, which altogether pay them some 130 million euros a year, around one third of the club’s revenues of 400 million.

In the past month, Real has shelled out more than 200 million euros for top stars Christiano Ronaldo, Ricardo kaka, Raul Albiol, and Karim Benzema.

Perez wants to up the club’s turnover to 500 million, partly so he can cover the huge salaries of 10 million a year promised to Ronaldo and Kaka and to pay for more signings.
