The street gangs and gang wars are not very new terms to us. With enmity between different groups of people and personal rivalries taking the form of dreadful and blood thirsty fights, there have been numerous instances of gangs wrestling for their supremacy over the other. From streets to prisons, these criminal groups have now become global and are recklessly carrying out their illegal activities and spilling blood of their foes.
The Prison gangs began to originate within the penal system and federal correctional facilities in the 1960s and 1970s. Whether behind the bars or out on the streets, the gang members synchronize their criminal activities quite proficiently. They may have been formed to protect their members from the other gangs and correctional officers in the prison, but at the end its all a fight for power in the expanse. So let us have look into the five wackiest prison gangs, running their mafia of drug trafficking, prostitution and murders.
Aryan Brotherhood
Also known as the AB, is white supremacist group that was formed in 1967 in the California prison system in San Quentin prison. The only way to be a member is to abide by their philosophy of “Blood In – Blood Out.” -Kill somebody to become a member and die to part from it. The true AB tattoo is a shamrock, the letters AB and three sixes. Apart from murders, drug and arms trafficking and so on, the handful of 1% of the prison population, is actually held responsible for up to 18% of murders in the federal prison system.
New Mexico Syndicate
Also known as La Eme, Mexican Mafia, was formed in the late 1950’s within the California Department of Corrections and is one of the oldest and most powerful prison gangs in the United States. It is well known for its drug trafficking, extortion, and murder. Mexican Mafia symbols include images of a black hand. The gang often uses the number 13 as gang identification, as it represents the 13th letter of the alphabet, the letter M.
The Black Guerrilla Family
This prison gang was founded in 1966 by George Jackson in the San Quentin State Prison in Marin County, California. A primary source of income for the BGF is derived from the distribution of cocaine and marijuana. With Mexican Mafia and Aryan Brotherhood as its main rivals, its members are also involved in other criminal activities including auto theft, burglary, drive-by shooting and homicide.
Blood And Crip Gangs
The Crips are one of the most violent associations of gangs in the U.S. The gang was founded in 1971 by Stanley “Tookie” Williams and Raymond Lee Washington to battle the neighboring street gangs. With around 300,000 gang members both inside and outside of jail, the gang carries out murders, robberies, drug dealings and other criminal activities. These people are so sadistic and violent that sometimes, brawls and fights explode within the gang itself , which usually end up in deaths of Crips members only. Its main rival gang is Blood that was formed in 1972. Inside the prison system there is truce and alliance between these groups to fight against the other existing prison gangs.
Mara Salvatrucha MS-13
It is the deadliest gang that anyone may ever come into contact with. The gang was set up in the 1980s by Salvadoran immigrants in Los Angeles. The majority of the gang comprises of Salvadorans, Hondurans, Guatemalans, and Nicaraguans. MS-13 is well known for drug smuggling, black market gun sales, theft, contract killing and human trafficking. Mara Salvatrucha is known as the most brutal gang that performs most violent crimes killing even innocent lives and hunting down anyone who speaks to law enforcement about them.
There are a number of other prison gangs like Nuestra Familia, Aryan Circle, Barrio Azteca, Dirty White Boys, Nazi Low Riders and so on. An interminable list of such prison gangs exists in just a few geographic locations, but they are rapidly spreading and having an adverse impact on state correctional facilities.
