Tramontana R, the weirdest car

Stunning? Or stunningly ugly? New Picture

This is the Tramontana R, an open-wheel hypercar fresh out of Spain and packing visuals that make the KTM X-Bow look a bit tame. It’s a bit clichéd to reference the Batmobile when talking about mental stealth supercars, but it seems apt here. Maybe with a bit of cockroach thrown in for good measure.

The Tramontana R is powered by a Mercedes-sourced 5.5-litre V12 fitted with a massive pair of turbochargers to boost power to a monstrous 760bhp and 811lb ft of torque.

All of which makes Tramontana’s claims of a 3.6-second 0-62mph time sound distinctively conservative – though we’re not complaining about the ten second run to 120mph. Long gearing, perhaps?

There’s room for two under the front-hinging canopy – you can wedge a passenger behind you in proper fighter pilot formation (clichéd reference number two). The custom Ohlins suspension allows you to adjust the R’s ride height by up to five centimetres, which brings the total ground clearance to, er, about five centimetres.

the Sound was decent ,the Caterham R500-style six-speed sequential box, though we’re less keen on the 385,000 Euro price tag. Tramontana reckons it can build 12 Rs this year… but as always, we’ll retain a healthy degree of scepticism until we get a drive in one.

Remembering victims of Indian Ocean tsunami

last 26Dec,

Fifth anniversary of Indian Ocean tsunami

Residents and foreigners in Phang Nga in southern Thailand release lanterns to mark the fifth anniversary of the 2004 tsunami. About 230,000 people died in a dozen nations. Indonesia suffered the highest death toll.

Phuket, Thailand - Buddhist monks in orange robes chanted on a beach in Thailand, a mother mourned her children at a mass grave in Indonesia and a man scattered flowers in now-placid waters Saturday to commemorate the 230,000 people killed five years ago when a tsunami ripped across the Indian Ocean rim.

The outpouring of aid that followed the Dec. 26, 2004, tsunami has helped rebuild homes, schools and coastal communities. But at Saturday's ceremonies, survivors spoke of the enduring wounds.

Thousands in Indonesia's Aceh province, which was hardest hit, attended prayer services at mosques and beside the mass graves where tens of thousands were buried. About 167,000 people were killed in Indonesia, more than two-thirds of them in Aceh.

Among them were the relatives of Siti Amridar, 48, who wept Saturday at a mass grave in Banda Aceh, the provincial capital. Four of her five children and her parents were washed away with their village.

The disaster's epicenter was off the coast of Aceh, the northern tip of the island of Sumatra, where a 9.2-magnitude earthquake struck underwater. It toppled homes and buildings and sent panicked communities rushing into the streets.

About 20 minutes later, a wall of water up to six stories high surged in from the sea, picking up toppled trees, crumpled cars and refrigerators along the way.

In Thailand, where more than 8,000 died, hundreds of residents and visitors returned to the southern island of Phuket.

In Sri Lanka, traffic came to a standstill as people observed two minutes of silence for the 35,000 people who died there.

Something in the sky on New Year's Eve happens once in a blue moon

THERE will be a blue moon on Thursday as New Year's Eve revellers welcome in 2010 - the first time since 1990 that a blue moon has coincided with New Year's Eve.

A blue moon - the second full moon in a calendar month - occurs only every 2½ years on average. This month, full moons occur on December 2 and December 31.

An astronomer, David Reneke, from Australasian Sciencemagazine, said it was rare for the event to land on New Year's Eve, and it would not happen again until 2028.

First Jesus-era house found in Nazareth

Extracted from Signon SanDiego

NAZARETH, Israel — Days before Christmas, archaeologists on Monday unveiled what they said were the remains of the first dwelling in Nazareth that can be dated back to the time of Jesus - a find that could shed new light on what the hamlet was like during the period the New Testament says Jesus lived there as a boy.

The dwelling and older discoveries of nearby tombs in burial caves suggest that Nazareth was an out-of-the-way hamlet of around 50 houses on a patch of about four acres (1.6 hectares). It was evidently populated by Jews of modest means who kept camouflaged grottos to hide from Roman invaders, said archaeologist Yardena Alexandre, excavations director at the Israel Antiquities Authority,

Based on clay and chalk shards found at the site, the dwelling appeared to house a "simple Jewish family," Alexandre added, as workers at the site carefully chipped away at mud with small pickaxes to reveal stone walls.

Nazareth holds a cherished place in Christianity. It is believed to be the town where Christian tradition says Jesus grew up and where an angel told Mary she would bear the child of God.

Give your Christmas tree some oversteer!

New Picture

It's that time of year again. That time when, unnecessarily early in the year, Lamborghiniunveils its traditionally hideous collection of Christmas goodies.

This year Lamborghini has created a range of limited edition candles and ceramic baubles inspired by the Gallardo Balboni. Which means they're very much like conventional candles and ceramic baubles, but far more oversteery and expensive.

Where your conventional four-wheel-drive candles and baubles trade a little of their wiry-edged feedback for more predictability and safety in the wet, these Balboni mementos are genuine track specials: far pointier, more aggressive specimens only to be tackled by the genuine Yuletide specialist.

They're... OK, they're tat. Sheer, shameless tat.

Maserati Quattroporte £76,752 - £94,880

Maserati Quattroporte Sport GT S

This is the finest large sporting saloon in the world. It sits at the top of a distinguished and expensive heap, including the V10 Audi S8, the 525bhp Mercedes S63 AMG and the all-new BMW 7-Series V8 twin turbo, and it trounces them all in different ways.

High praise indeed, but this new Quattroporte Sport GT S is that good. All the planets seem to have aligned at Maserati with this car, and the combination of a raft of small changes makes it completely rock.

First, a catch-up with the Maserati model line-up, in case it's overtaken you lately. Anything with an ‘S' means the new wet-sump 4.7-litre V8 is under the nose. So, the GranTurismo coupe comes in standard (4.2-litre) and S (4.7) forms. The coupe S uses a version of Ferrari's F1 ‘flappy paddle' robotised manual 'box, fitted at the rear in a transaxle layout.

This Quattroporte Sport GT S gets a very similar 4.7-litre engine, tweaked to give 433bhp (8bhp more than the standard QP S and 38bhp more than the 4.2) but mated to a conventional ZF automatic gearbox - the same 'box you'll find on Jags, Mercs and BMWs, but tweaked to Maserati's high-revving requirements. It is a fantastic auto - quick to change in manual mode, and smooth and direct in automatic, a perfect match for the car's character.

In memorable of Brittany Murphy

It's hard to know what to say at a time like this. Brittany Murphy, age 32, was found dead in her home over the weekend, the victim of a heart attack. It's hard to process, this young star being taken from us by something that isn't supposed to be a danger for women until they've hit the age of 50. The best we can do for now is to honor her memory with a look back at her tragically abbreviated career.

The image below comes from "Clueless," the Amy Heckerling comedy from 1995 that first put Murphy into the public eye for many. It's a movie that in many ways launched her career, leading to memorable roles in the Eminem-starring "8 Mile," "Girl, Interrupted," "Spun," "Sin City" and "Happy Feet," plus a recurring role on the hit animated series from Mike Judge, "King of the Hill."

"Clueless" (1995): Murphy's film debut came in what became an instant classic to teens around the world. Just as director Amy Heckerling done in her earlier film, "Fast Times at Ridgemont High," "Clueless" launched the careers of a slew of talented young actors: Alicia Silverstone, Paul Rudd, Donald Faison, and of course Murphy.

"8 Mile" (2002): In this critical and commercial phenomenon, Murphy portrayed Eminem's first (and, to date, only) big-screen love interest. When their relationship extended for a time into real life, it lent all the more power to their very apparent on-screen chemistry.

"Uptown Girls" (2003): Murphy went from riches-to-rags as the spoiled, wealthy Molly, a daughter of a deceased rock star, who upon losing her fortune, is forced to become a nanny to an uptight 8-year-old (Dakota Fanning). Ultra-spontaneous and irresponsible (yet oh-so-charming) at first, Molly manages to grow up while her precocious charge learns how to be a kid.

"Sin City" (2005): For an actress with such a clearly contemporary vibe, Murphy fit seamlessly into Frank Miller and Robert Rodriguez's stylized noir world as Shellie, the barmaid caught between Jackie Boy (Benicio Del Toro) and Dwight (Clive Owen).

"Happy Feet" (2006): "Oddly enough, of all the characters I've played, Gloria is the most like me. And she's a penguin!" Murphy laughed as she gushed to MTV News about her working with director George Miller on the 2006 box office smash in a role that allowed her to sing Queen with a Gospel choir there to support her vocals.

Mini-Enzo!

New Picture

What happens if you take the Ferrari Enzo and put it on a 90°C boil wash for a few hours?

You get a Surpasse V, that's what. Created by Japanese kit car specialist Suzusho, it's a lightweight Lotus-rival that features the 2.3-litre, 256bhp turbo petrol engine from theMazda3 MPS wedged into a car weighing just 850kg.

Which means it'll be mental-fast. Though Suzusho is yet to release performance figures, bear in mind that the Mazda3 MPS weighs around 500kg more and will hit 60mph in six seconds flat. The Lotus Exige 260, the Surpasse's closest rival on power and weight, can crack 60mph in under four seconds.

The Surpasse V was designed by Kenji Mimura, the man responsible for the short-lived Maki F1 team, which competed in just eight races in the mid-70s. He's obviously a big fan of the design styles of Maranello and Hethel - if you're not so keen on our boil-washed Enzo theory, how about the stunted offspring of an FXX and an Exige?

BMW Z4 gets hotter

New Picture

BMW has announced that it will unleash its hottest new Z4 yet at the Detroit show in January.

It isn't an M, but it isn't far off. The snappily named Z4 sDrive35is (that 's' at the end is the important new bit) gets BMW's 3.0-litre twin-turbo straight-six engine boosted up to 340bhp - 34bhp more than the previous most powerful Z4.

Which means it is fast. The new Z4 will crack 62mph in 4.8 seconds - down 0.3 seconds and exactly the same as the Porsche Boxster Spyder - with top speed limited to 155mph.
There's extra torque, too - up from 332lb ft to 369lb ft on overboost. BMW's seven-speed double-clutch gearbox is fitted as standard, mated to a launch control system.

Need more kit? How about lower suspension, a new sports exhaust and an M-Sport bodykit?

All of which, inevitably, comes at a price: just shy of £44,000, which puts it right on level pegging with that Boxster Spyder - though you do, admittedly, get a whole lot more equipment as standard in your Z4. Like, er, doorhandles. And a roof.

With no news on a Z4M arriving any time soon, this is the hottest Z4 we'll see for a while. It goes on sale in the UK next March: anyone tempted?

New E-Class cabrio

New Picture

We've had airbags, aircon, air-o-dynamics (bit of a stretch, that one, apologies) and AirScarves. Now may we please introduce you to the latest member of the 'air' family... it's AirCap!

AirCap is found at the top of the windscreen of the new Mercedes E-Class cabrio, set to be unveiled at the Detroit show in January before going on sale in the UK in March.

It's a six-inch deflector that pushes air over the top of the cabin and away from the fragile heads of the occupants, allowing the E-Class cabrio to roll with the roof down, even in cold climates. Good news, too, for toupee wearers.

Sounds handy, but AirCap will affect the E's impressive aerodynamics: without the deflector raised, the cabrio boasts a drag coefficient of 0.28, making it the slipperiest convertible in its class.

The E-Class cabrio replaces the CLK cabriolet - indirectly, at least - in Merc's line-up, though should weigh in slightly cheaper when it reaches forecourts in the UK. Like the CLK, it sticks with a fabric roof instead of a folding hard-top and, model-for-model, is around 30kg lighter than its predecessor.

The E-Cabrio will launch with the choice of three diesel and four petrol engines, ranging from the 168bhp E220 CDI at the bottom end to the 383bhp E500 at the top. No word on an AMG version yet, however.

For a big luxo-convertible, it should be reasonably green: all the engines bar the 500 get Merc's BlueEfficiency tech and low rolling resistance tyres, as well as a more economical alternator control system.

Aston Martin Cygnet, it’s an IQ

New Picture

Back in June, Aston Martin released a photo of its Cygnet concept, a Toyota IQ-based city car with the face of a Vantage.

Now Aston has shown off a handful more images of the Cygnet - which now looks mightly close to production-ready - and... yeah, we're still a little vexed.

This is partly because Aston is still staying very quiet on any details about the Cygnet.

No word on potential engines or performance - though it'd be safe to assume that it'll be closely related to that of the IQ - just an assertion that the Cygnet 'represents a creative, environmentally conscious solution... with the prestige of Aston Martin's luxury brand ownership'.

Aston is pitching the Cygnet as 'a tender to a luxury yacht' - the luxury yacht being a full fat Vantage, DB9 or DBS (or, soon, the Rapide). It will initially only be offered to existing Aston owners, though could go on general release later in its life.

Aston hopes to bring the Cygnet to production some time in 2010, with the aim of as many as 2,000 cars a year. If the words ‘why, for the love of God, why?' are flashing through your mind at the moment, consider this: CO2 emissions.
If Aston shifts a couple of thousand Cygnets, each emitting under, say, 120g/km of CO2, that's a hell of a reduction in its fleet emissions.

Fiat releases “MultiAir engine technology”.

Fiat Group Multiair engine in Alfa Romeo MiTo

Fiat has introduced their Multiair engine technology. This breakthrough greatly increases fuel economy and engine performance while reducing emissions. Fiat has been working on this since the 1980's and shows it's forward thinking. It's an exciting 21'st century update to the internalcombustion engine and is another example of Fiat innovation.

MULTIAIR: THE ULTIMATE AIR MANAGEMENT STRATEGY

Multiair is the new electro-hydraulic system of engine valves for dynamic and direct control of air and combustion, cylinder by cylinder and stroke by stroke .Thanks to a direct control of the air through the intake engine valves without using the throttle, Multiair helps reducing fuel consumption; pollutant emissions are likewise reduced through combustion control.

Multiair is a versatile technology, easily applicable to all gasoline engines and with future potential developments also for Diesel engines.

BENEFITS:

-FUEL CONSUMPTION AND EMISSIONS REDUCTION
-INCREASE OF BOTH MAX POWER AND TORQUE
-ENHANCED PERFORMANCE AND FUN TO DRIVE

The Multiair Technology Benefits

The Multiair Technology potential benefits for gasoline engines exploited so far can be summarized as follows:

Maximum Power is increased by up to 10% thanks to the adoption of a power-oriented mechanical cam profile.

Low-rpm Torque is improved by up to 15% through early intake valve closing strategies that maximize the air mass trapped in the cylinders.

Elimination of pumping losses brings a 10% reduction of Fuel Consumption and CO2 emissions, both in Naturally Aspirated and Turbocharged engines with the same displacement.

Multiair Turbocharged and downsized engines can achieve up to 25% Fuel Economy improvement over conventional Naturally Aspirated engines with the same level of performance
Optimum valve control strategies during engine warm-up and internal Exhaust Gas.

Recirculation, realized by reopening the intake valves during the exhaust stroke, result in emissions reduction ranging from 40% for HC / CO to 60% for NOx.

Constant upstream air pressure, atmospheric for Naturally Aspirated and higher for Turbocharged engines, together with the extremely fast air mass control, cylinder-by-cylinder and stroke-by-stroke, result in a superior dynamic engine response.

Application of the Multiair Technology to FPT Engines

The first world-wide application of the Multiair technology will be the Fire 1400cc 16V Naturally Aspirated and Turbocharged engines.

The second application is a new Small Gasoline Engine (SGE - 900cc Twin-cylinder) where cylinder head design has been specifically optimized for the Multiair actuator integration. Here again, there will be both a Naturally Aspirated and a Turbocharged version. A specific Turbocharged engine version will be bi-fuel (gasoline- CNG).

Thanks to radical downsizing, the Turbocharged Small Gasoline Engine achieves Diesel-like CO2 emission levels, which are further reduced in its Natural Gas version with CO2 emissions lower than 80 g/km in many vehicle applications.

New Alfa Giulietta!

The cutest Car from Alfa Romeo line!

New Picture

At long last, Alfa Romeo’s replacement for the 147 has arrived, and it is called the Giulietta.

The name is news in itself, as the car has had a tortuous christening process: originally dubbed the 149 (or the 148, by some accounts) before becoming the Milano. However, this name was recently scrapped after complaints from workers in Alfa’s Milan factory, who are unhappy at the company’s decision to relocate to Turin.

The Giulietta sits on an all-new platform and will feature Alfa’s ‘DNA’ system – which adapts engine response, steering, stability control and the electronic diff depending on conditions – across the range.

It’ll be launched with four turbo engines, including a 170bhp iteration of Fiat’s lovely new 1.4-litre MultiAir petrol engine and a 170bhp JTDM diesel.

After the Giulietta’s introduction next year, we’ll see a 235bhp ‘Quadrifoglio Verde’ hot hatch version. We are very much looking forward to that one.

So… waddyathink? Is the Giulietta worthy of its classic name?

World’s fastest SUV!

The so called Black Death!

New Picture

You are looking at the fastest SUV in the world. Your eyes may hurt.

This is the Brabus Bi-Turbo V12 GLK, a massively tuned version of Merc's sort-of-off-roader that's capable of - ready? Sure? OK then - 211mph.
211mph. In an SUV. Whichever way you look at that number, it's just... wrong, isn't it?

That frankly disturbing pace comes courtesy of Merc's V12, stroked from 5.5 to 6.3 litres and - thanks to the addition of a couple of turbos and plenty of other shiny stuff - putting out 740bhp and 995lb ft of torque. Those are dangerous numbers.

The Bi-Turbo GLK will nail the 0-62mph sprint in 4.2 seconds, which might sound (relatively) modest until you consider the sort of gearing required to get an SUV to 211mph. A better indicator of the sheer oomph on tap is that it'll accelerate from standstill to 124mph in just over 12 seconds. Again, those are dangerous numbers.
As is this one: 397,000. That's the cost, in Euros, of the Brabus GLK. That's about £360,000 - or around five times the cost of the BMW X5M.

Insane? Or genius? Or both? You decide...

New Jay Chou Album coming soon

New Picture

Jay Chou plans on recording and producing new album in Hollywood

Since finishing the filming of idol drama "Pandamen", heavenly king Jay Chou has flown to America to film "The Green Hornet", but for this frequent GMA winner who has just finished his tour concert, the new album the fans look forward has disappeared? According to reports, Jay Chou finished writing the 10 new songs a while ago, but unlike in the past when he has always recorded it in Taiwan, this time he is going over to Hollywood, he's still insisting on 1 album per year and so he's considering recording and producing the album in America.

So Jay Chou once again as Taiwan's top earning singer

Singer Jay Chou has once again emerged as the top earning artiste in the Taiwanese music industry, pulling in about 554 million Taiwan dollars (S$23.7 million) in 2009, according to annual industry estimates.

Popular girl group S.H.E takes second place with an estimated income of 360 million Taiwan dollars (S$15.4 million) while Chou's former squeeze, pop princess Jolin Tsai, comes in third, with about 350 million Taiwan dollars (S$15 million).

Other top earners include singers Wang Li Hom, Wilbur Pan, Show Luo and rock band Mayday.

Chou, 30, took home a total of HK$27.5 million (S$4.9 million) for his roles in the films "The Treasure Hunter" and "The Green Hornet". In addition, he also made bank from six corporate appearances, seven concerts and nine commercials as well as his album royalties.

S.H.E made their millions mainly through their appearances in commercials, pocketing a cool 200 million Taiwan dollars (S$8.9 million) from these alone. The group also made money from their 24 performances as well sales of their book and fees for a movie role.

Tsai, 28, who just returned from a three-month hiatus, appeared in 11 commercials, had 24 corporate performances and two concerts in the past year. Her album royalties amounted to 20 million Taiwan dollars (S$850,000).

Singer Elva Hsiao, 30, earned the title of "Comeback Queen" for squeezing into tenth spot after only returning to the music scene in September. She managed to rake in more than HK$25 million (S$4.4 million) within three months of her return.

and another related news!

Jay Chou is the 2009 top-earner with S$27 million
The ranking for 2009's top 10 highest-earning artistes is finally out. This list, compiled based on each artistes' commercial viability, is put together with the help of representatives from various recording companies. After setting a record of raking in TW$7 billion last year, Taiwanese multi-hyphenate performer Jay Chou retains his top spot despite his slightly-dipped earnings of TW$5.5 billion (S$27 million) this year.

Right behind him are Taiwanese singer-songwriter, Lo Ta-yo, Chang Chen-yue, Jonathan Lee, and Zhou Hua Jian. They each earned S$23 million from their 58 sets of concert performances.

The second runner-up position belongs to Taiwanese girl group, S.H.E. Apart from filming 20 different commercials, the girls also released a self-penned book this year and raked in a total of S$18 million.

Taiwanese pop princess Jolin Tsai came in close behind the trio with a total earning of S$16 million. Apart from 24 corporate performances, and 11 commercial ads, the 29-year-old artiste went on a three-month long break in September after promoting her latest music album and has a slew of commercial offers waiting for her when she resumes work in January 2010.

Jolin's good friend, Show Luo, is next with his S$11 million earnings this year. Taiwanese rock band is ranked at sixth placing with their combined takings of S$10.3 million followed by Angela Chang at S$10 million, Wang Lee Hom at S$9.82 million, Zhang Hui Mei (A Mei) at S$7.44 million, and Fahrenheit at S$7.1 million.

NASA sky-mapping mission delayed

A problem with a rocket engine pushes back the launch of the WISE project from Friday to Saturday, but bad weather could cause further delays.

New Picture

A balky rocket engine has forced NASA to delay Friday's launch of its infrared sky-mapping mission, officials said today.

The problem, described as an anomaly that surfaced during routine testing of a steering engine, caused the space agency to delay the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer mission by at least one day. But inclement weather expected throughout the weekend in California could push the launch back several more days.

The steering engine is designed to place the spacecraft into orbit 326 miles above the Earth. Over the next year, the craft's telescope will scan the near region of space in the infrared part of the electromagnetic spectrum, searching for asteroids and failed stars that are too dim and cold to see in ordinary light.

Because infrared instruments can detect even the minimal emissions of heat from very cold objects, WISE is expected to unmask tens of thousands of asteroids and possibly even a giant planet that some astronomers believe could be hiding beyond the orbit of Pluto.

Airbus A400M Needs States’ Funding to Continue

Airbus SAS’s A400M military transport, which performed its maiden flight today in Seville, isn’t viable without a “significant contribution” from government customers, the planemaker’s chief executive said.

Airbus Chief Executive Tom Enders said his company’s first military plane and thousands of jobs connected with depend on the governments’ willingness to step up funding. The A400M, which is being assembled in Seville, Spain, is already suffering 2.3 billion euros ($3.4 billion) in cost overruns.

Airbus and government representatives sought to use the maiden flight as a way to overcome a deadlock on negotiations that has put in doubt the future of the 20 billion-euro project. Construction of the A400M is sapping engineers and money from Airbus, while the governments who ordered the plane have few alternatives they can tap for military or humanitarian missions.

‘Significant Contribution’

Airbus parent European Aeronautics, Defence & Space Co. has requested about 5 billion euros in additional funding toward the plane, German Deputy Defense Minister Christian Schmidt said earlier this week.

Sharing the Cost

Abandoning the program outright would leave EADS with about 6 billion euros in upfront payments that it would need to refund. The European partners would be without a modern military transporter to replace decades-old Transall and Hercules models, at a time when Germany, the A400M’s biggest client, and other European countries engage in more military missions abroad.

About Airbus Military's A400M airlifter

A400M

is a cost-effective, high-speed turboprop aircraft specifically designed to meet the harmonised needs of European NATO nations, as well as the requirements of international air forces.

The airlifter is designed to replace ageing C-130 Hercules and C-160 Transall fleets currently in service around the world, and features more than twice the payload capacity and volume of these two aircraft.

Powered by four modern turboprop engines driving state-of-the-art eight-bladed propellers, the A400M is capable of cruising speeds of up to Mach 0.72 and altitudes up to 37,000 feet.

The A400M is designed for operations from unprepared runways and has excellent short and soft field performance - enabling it to deliver large amounts of payload to tactical forward bases or to evacuate a full complement of refugees or casualties from remote areas. It can also carry up to 116 paratroopers who can jump out of the aircraft either through the large cargo door or two side doors.

In addition, the A400M is fully equipped to perform air-to-air refuelling, and also can serve as a receiver aircraft to take on fuel while in flight - further extending its operating range.

Dinosaurs originated in South America!

Bones discovered in a New Mexico quarry indicate that the first dinosaurs appeared in what is now South America, with some migrating northward into the US as the continent began to split apart.

Dinosaurs originated in South America

The 213-million-year-old fossils of previously unknown carnivorous dinosaur Tawa hallae include several of the best preserved dinosaur skeletons from the Triassic Period.
Tawa was about six feet long - the size of a large dog, but with a much longer tail.

"If you have continents splitting apart, you get isolation," said lead author Sterling Nesbit of the University of Texas at Austin. "So when barriers develop, you would expect that multiple carnivorous dinosaurs in a region should represent a closely related endemic radiation. But that is what we don’t see in early dinosaur evolution."

Instead, the research team found three distinct carnivorous dinosaurs – including Tawa – in the fossil-rich beds at Ghost Ranch.

1,700 UK scientists back climate science

LONDON — Fighting back against climate skeptics, over 1,700 scientists in Britain have signed a statement defending the evidence that climate change is being caused by humans, Britain's weather office said Thursday.

It was the latest attempt to remind the world of the reality of global warming after a cache of leaked e-mails was seized upon by skeptics as proof of a scientific conspiracy to stifle or twist the data on climate change.

"We, members of the U.K. science community, have the utmost confidence in the observational evidence for global warming and the scientific basis for concluding that it is due primarily to human activities. The evidence and the science are deep and extensive," the statement posted to the Met Office Web site said.

"They come from decades of painstaking and meticulous research, by many thousands of scientists across the world who adhere to the highest levels of professional integrity."

E-mails stolen from the University of East Anglia and released to the Internet last month appeared to show top climate scientists discussing ways to shield data from public scrutiny and suppress others' work. Climate skeptics — those who deny that human activity is responsible for global warming — have seized on the correspondence as evidence that scientists have conspired to hide the facts.

Top officials in Britain and at the U.N. have acknowledged that the incident has damaged public perception of the science but say the facts are solid. Scientists have also been dismayed by the reaction to the e-mails, and several groups — including the American Association for the Advancement of Science — have released statements in support of the evidence behind man-made global warming.

Of the more than 1,700 signatories behind Thursday's statement, a Met Office spokeswoman said "a significant majority work directly in the climate science field." However she said she could not provide a detailed breakdown.

The spokeswoman said those scientists who didn't work directly in the climate science field were familiar with the impact of global warming on their respective disciplines. She spoke anonymously in line with department policy.

Modern Warfare Film in the Works.

The most successive Gaming Franchise into Hollywood soon!!

Modern Warfare voice actors' loose lips dish details on additional projects.

Infinity Ward may be planning a few surprise Call of Duty projects, but the series' voice actors seem determined to spoil any surprises. Last week, That VideoGame Blog reported that actor Craig Fairbrass, the voice of Simon "Ghost" Riley, mentioned at a UK launch event for Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 that Infinity Ward is considering making a spin-off "little game" featuring his character to go along with the already-published comic book.
Today, actor Kevin McKidd, voice of Soap MacTavish, revealed to the New York Post that a Modern Warfare film is being considered. "I had no idea [Modern Warfare] would be so huge, and now there are talks of a feature film," McKidd told the New York Post. As a funny side note, when the New York Post asked McKidd if he would like to play Soap in the prospective film, he replied, "if the script is good, and Gerard [Butler] isn't available, then absolutely."

WiGig Completes Wireless Specification

The 60-GHz technology will support transmission rates up to 7 Gbps in home and small office networks.

A new robust wireless technology for the home appears slated to begin appearing in devices in 2011 after the Wireless Gigabit Alliance (WiGig) announced on Thursday that it has completed its unified wireless specification. The 60-GHz technology will support transmission rates up to 7 Gbps.

It's not immediately clear exactly where WiGig will fit in the myriad of wireless schemes, some already in use like the many Wi-Fi flavors, or some still being developed like WirelessHD. However, the fact that WiGig is supported by many leading high-tech firms means it's likely to find its place, probably in home and small office networking where robust networks are required.

Ali Sadri, president and chairman of the WiGig Alliance, pointed to the most likely market when he said in a statement, "We're rapidly paving the way for the introduction of the next generation of high-performance wireless products -- PCs, mobile handsets, TVs and displays, Blu-ray players, digital cameras, and many more."

The WiGig alliance has worked with the IEEE 802.11 standard and has developed WiGig to be backward compatible with existing Wi-Fi technologies.

The WiGig alliance said protocol adaption layers are under development for the support of system interfaces like PC peripheral data buses and display interfaces.

Windows Live Messenger 2010

The successor to the current Wave 3 version of Windows Live Messenger has finally been unveiled. Neowin has got hold of exclusive screenshots which shows off the next version of Windows Live Messenger, that is going to be the part of Windows Live Wave 4 release. The most significant change in Windows Live Messenger 2010 is the added option for “social stream” updates, which is going to retrieve all your friends updates across various network activities like facebook, twitter and blog posts, that you have added in Windows Live.

Windows Live Messenger 2010

Another welcome change is the added support for tabbed conversations in chat window. This functionality was requested for years and it seems like Microsoft has finally listened to the feedback provided by users by building this into the client app.

Most of the other features are still unknown and by the looks of the screenshots, UI still seems to be in the early stages of the development. This Messenger client along with other updates for the entire Windows Live Essentials suite is due for some time now. We can expect them to be out in the first half of 2010 as part of Wave 4 release of Windows Live at either Consumer Electronics Show in January, or at the MIX10 conference in March 2010.

Seven Anti-Virus Programs Fail Windows 7 Test

Virus Bulletin conducted it’s most recent tests in November and the results were made available this month. The security research company evaluated 43 antimalware products (product submission deadline was October 28) for the 32-bit version of Windows 7 Professional.

Out of the 43 antimalware products, 36 products passed and 7 ( what a coincidence ) failed. The basic requirements for a product passing the test is detecting, both on demand and on access using its default settings, all malware known to be “In the Wild” at the time of the review, and not detecting any false positives when scanning a set of clean files.

Just under a fifth of the products unfortunately did not manage to meet these requirements: 36 products passed the test, leaving seven products to fail. Here are the ones that passed and failed, as well as the reason for not passing.

  • Pass: Alwil avast! 4.8, Arcabit ArcaVir 2010, Authentium Command Anti-Malware, AVG Internet Security, Avira AntiVir Personal, Avira AntiVir Professional, BitDefender Antivirus 2010, Bullguard 8.7, eScan Internet Security Suite, ESET NOD32 Antivirus 5, Fortinet FortiClient, Frisk F-PROT, F-Secure Internet Security 2010, F-Secure Protection Services, GDATA AntiVirus 2010, K7 Total Security, Kaspersky Anti-Virus 2010, Kaspersky Anti-Virus 6, Kingsoft Anti-Virus 2010 Advanced, Kingsoft Anti-Virus 2010 Standard, McAfee Total Protection, McAfee VirusScan Enterprise, Microsoft Forefront Client Security, Microsoft Security Essentials, Nifty Corporation Security 24, PC Tools Internet Security, PC Tools Spyware Doctor with AV, Preventon Antivirus, Qihoo 360 Security, Quick Heal AntiVirus Lite, Sophos Endpoint Security and Control, Sunbelt Vipre, Symantec Endpoint Security 11, Trustport Antivirus 2009, VirusBuster Professional, and Webroot AntiVirus with SpySweeper.
  • Fail: AhnLab V3Net I.S. 8.0 (one wildlist miss), CA Internet Security Suite Plus 2010 (three wildlist misses), CA Threat Manager (two wildlist misses), eEye Blink Professional (13 wildlist misses, 1 false positive), Filseclab Twister Anti-TrojanVirus (1920 wildlist misses, 2 false positives), Kingsoft Anti-Virus 2010 Swinstar (one wildlist miss), and Norman Security Suite (13 wildlist misses).

The majority of the security companies passed without any problem. Out of the ones that failed, i cant say any of those names are very familiar to me, but if you happen to be using any of them, perhaps you may look at changing your anti-virus. Microsoft’s new antivirus, Microsoft Security Essentials passed with flying colors, but this was to be expected as it would be quite an embarrassment for Microsoft if it hadn’t.

BMW 7 Series, £52,165 - £95,450

BMW 7-Series ActiveHybrid 7L

BMW 7 Series ActiveHybrid 7L

BMW finally go green!!

A hybrid system is a way of making a car more efficient. And efficient can mean the same performance on less fuel, or more performance on the same fuel. Lexus pioneered the second route. Now BMW has taken the idea and gone ever so slightly berserk. The ActiveHybrid 7 is a two-and-a-bit tonne luxo-barge that gets to 60mph in 4.7 seconds.

Truth is, when you drive it like that, the hybrid system isn't doing much. It's only a mild hybrid, which means the electric motor, sandwiched between the engine and transmission and turning always at engine speed, is relatively small and incapable of driving the car unaided. Instead, what it does is fill the gaps when the V8 isn't working very efficiently, so when you're driving gently you're using less throttle.

The electric system also recuperates energy when you lift off the throttle and coast. This powers the aircon and operates a stop-start system that shuts off the engine when you come to rest and instantly restarts when you release the brakes. These things are common in manuals, but not autos. And most of them can't keep the aircon going, but this one can.

The system was co-developed with Mercedes and uses the same motor and battery as the Benz S400 BlueHybrid, but for the S-Class itis hooked to a V6 and tuned for economy, whereas for the 7-Series it's hooked to a 449bhp twin-turbo V8 and tuned for epic performance.

Net result is a car as economical as the six-cylinder 740i in gentle running, but will go like the V12 760i when you decide to forget it's a hybrid and just drive it like you stole it. It's not just the sheer kick on the back when the turbos spool up, it's the instant response of the electric torque that does it for me. Not to mention the noise transition - from civilised near-silence to a delicious V8 chorus. Result is not just a limo that's almost wickedly quick, but one that feels even quicker than it is.

But you won't be able to buy it in Britain. Some of the vital electrical bits are mounted where the steering column would need to go for RHD.

So don't go bugging your local showroom. Anyway, at £5k above a similarly equipped 750i in countries where they're both sold, it's also super expensive. But it does show how hybrids needn't be boring, and the sooner that idea catches on, the better.

Droid Tops iPhone 3GS for Gadget of the Year Award

Time Magazine today has published its list of “Top 10 of Everything” in which they have picked up Motorola Droid on Verizon network as the winner for their “Gadget of the Year” award. iPhone 3GS which was released in the same year as Motorola Droid could only manage 4th place behind Droid, The Nook and Dyson Air Multiplier. This is what Time’s had to say about Motorola Droid.

Droid Beats iPhone 3GS

Everybody likes Android, Google’s open-source smartphone operating system. But a smartphone operating system isn’t all that satisfying without an actual kick-ass smartphone wrapped around it. Now Android has one: The Droid is a hefty beast, a metal behemoth without the gloss and finish of the iPhone, but you don’t miss it. The Droid’s touchscreen is phenomenally sharp and vivid, it has an actual physical (not great, but good enough) keyboard, and best of all, the Droid is on Verizon’s best-of-breed 3G network. It’s Android’s first credible challenge to the iPhone.
Price: $300.

While Droid maybe the best Android based smartphone out there, but to call it as the best gadget over iPhone 3GS is kind of a shocker. iPhone 3GS in my opinion, both software and hardware design wise is superior to what Droid has to offer. Android OS still isn’t as matured as iPhone OS is in its third revision and with an App Store with over 100K apps, iPhone deserves to be on the top spot.

Having said that, Motorola must be celebrating their unexpected win over iPhone 3GS as Time’s Gadget of the Year. Motorola, before Droid, did not had a major device to carry its sales and attract attention since the launch of its popular RAZR phone in the year 2005.

68th anniversary of Pearl Harbor attack commemorated

image

PEARL HARBOR, more than 2,000 people gathered at Kilo Pier in Pearl Harbor Monday morning to remember the bombing of Pearl Harbor on Dec. 7, 1941.  Governor Linda Lingle was among those in attendance as were about 50 survivors from the attacks.

The National Park Service and the U.S. Navy hosted the service.  At 7:55 AM everyone observed a moment of silence to mark the exact moment the offensive began.

New Space”Tourist”ship debut!

image

Virgin Galactic's unveiling of the SpaceShipTwo rocket plane drew hundreds of paying space tourists and travel agents, rocket geeks and glitterati to the Mojave Air and Space Port. For a while, it looked as if stormy skies and brisk winds would force a change in Virgin billionaire founder Richard Branson's plans for an after-dark, outdoor debut.

But in the end, the spotlights went on and the music blared as scheduled, despite the near-freezing temperatures, the wind and the puddles of rain. SpaceShipTwo rolled down the runway, suspended from its WhiteKnightTwo carrier airplane. California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger and New Mexico Gov. Bill Richardson stepped out and smashed bottles of champagne - and Branson's daughter, Holly, officially gave the 60-foot-long craft its new name: the VSS Enterprise.

The name pays tribute to the sailing ships of old as well, to the fictional "Star Trek" starship - and to the idea that the craft will bring private enterprise into the world of space travel, said Virgin Galactic's president, Will Whitehorn.

SpaceShipTwo has been under development for years in a Mojave hangar at Scaled Composites - the company that built the craft's predecessor, SpaceShipOne, to win a $10 million prize for private spaceflight five years ago.

image Virgin Galactic founder Richard Branson chats with an NBC video crew Monday with SpaceShipOne's "Galactic Girl" logo hanging above them in a zero-G pose. Click on the image to watch NBC correspondent George Lewis for "Nightly News."

Branson is spending an estimated $250 million to $400 million on his space venture, which will involve building at least six SpaceShipTwo planes and two WhiteKnightTwo motherships. The company already has signed up more than 300 would-be spacefliers, including actress Victoria Principal, Hollywood director Bryan Singer and 90-year-old enviro-theorist James Lovelock. Paralyzed cosmologist Stephen Hawking, who sampled zero-G two years ago, may eventually fly as well.

What SpaceShipTwo will do
SpaceShipTwo is designed to carry six passengers and two pilots to the edge of outer space, past the 100-kilometer (62-mile) altitude mark. The flight profile would provide about five minutes of weightlessness, a commanding view of a curving Earth below the black sky of space, and the world's highest roller-coaster ride going up and coming down.

Rutan has kept mum about his expectations for the flight schedule, but observers guess that 2011 or 2012 is the likeliest time frame for the start of commercial service. Between now and then, SpaceShipTwo is likely to go through scores of tests. Ground testing starts on Tuesday, Branson told.

The first flight tests, due to begin next year, would involve captive-carry flights during which the rocket plane would ride between WhiteKnightTwo's twin cabins so that Scaled's team can check the aerodynamics of the combined crafts. Then there would be drop tests, in which SpaceShipTwo would be released and piloted through a glide back down to Earth.

Eventually, the hybrid rocket motor would be added to the mix: SpaceShipTwo would light up its engine in a series of powered flights, climaxing with the full profile for commercial service. SpaceShipTwo would be dropped from WhiteKnightTwo at a height of 60,000 feet, blast off, rise to spaceworthy heights and go supersonic on the way down.
