The World most powerful Diesel Engine

OMG This one is certainly mesmerize me. Japan, the largest industrialize country in Asia are really have the brain and manpower to develop such a massive engineering workmanship..

The biggest Diesel engine i’ve ever come across with live in front of me was the Daihatsu 12DK- 32B

DSC02390

and the size was similar to a house..but after browsing through the web..this one was really a shock to me.

The Wartsila-Sulzer RTA96-C turbocharged two-stroke diesel engine is the most powerful and most efficient prime-mover in the world today.  The Aioi Works of Japan's Diesel United, Ltd built the first engines and is where some of these pictures were taken.

It is available in 6 through 14 cylinder versions, all are inline engines.  These engines were designed primarily for very large container ships.  Ship owners like a single engine/single propeller design and the new generation of larger container ships needed a bigger engine to propel them.

The cylinder bore is just under 38" and the stroke is just over 98".  Each cylinder displaces 111,143 cubic inches (1820 liters) and produces 7780 horsepower.  Total displacement comes out to 1,556,002 cubic inches (25,480 liters) for the fourteen cylinder version.

Some facts on the 14 cylinder version:

Total engine weight:
2300 tons  (The crankshaft alone weighs 300 tons.)

Length:
89 feet

Height:
44 feet

Maximum power:
108,920 hp at 102 rpm

Maximum torque:
5,608,312 lb/ft at 102rpm

Fuel consumption at maximum power is 0.278 lbs per hp per hour (Brake Specific Fuel Consumption).  Fuel consumption at maximum economy is 0.260 lbs/hp/hour.  At maximum economy the engine exceeds 50% thermal efficiency.  That is, more than 50% of the energy in the fuel in converted to motion.
For comparison, most automotive and small aircraft engines have BSFC figures in the 0.40-0.60 lbs/hp/hr range and 25-30% thermal efficiency range.

Even at its most efficient power setting, the big 14 consumes 1,660 gallons of heavy fuel oil per hour.

The internals of this engine are a bit different than most automotive engines.
The top of the connecting rod is not attached directly to the piston.  The top of the connecting rod attaches to a "crosshead" which rides in guide channels.  A long piston rod then connects the crosshead to the piston.
I assume this is done so the the sideways forces produced by the connecting rod are absorbed by the crosshead and not by the piston.  Those sideways forces are what makes the cylinders in an auto engine get oval-shaped over time.

The crank sitting in the block (also known as a "gondola-style" bedplate).  This is a 10 cylinder version.
Note the steps by each crank throw that lead down into the crankcase.

A piston & piston rod assembly.  The piston is at the top.  The large square plate at the bottom is where the whole assembly attaches to the crosshead

image And some piston rods

The "spikes" on the piston rods are hollow tubes that go into the holes you can see on the bottom of the pistons (top picture) and inject oil into the inside of the piston which keeps the top of the piston from overheating.  Some high-performance auto engines have a similar feature where an oil squirter nozzle squirts oil onto the bottom of the piston.

GM power has shifted to China

SHANGHAI -- Largely overlooked in last month's sweeping management reorganization of the new post-bankruptcy General Motors Co. was a recentering of power to Shanghai.

Nick Reilly went from overseeing GM's Asia operations based in Shanghai to overseeing all of the automaker's operations outside of North America, except for Opel -- ending decades of bureaucratic silos that had carved up the globe into regional divisions.

So while GM's Canada and Mexico operations report through the United States, most of the rest of the world reports through China.

"It should signal to everybody that certainly North America is going to be important to righting the ship, but basically the bread is going to be buttered out of Asia," said Michael Robinet, vice president of global vehicle forecasts at CSM Worldwide. "GM fully understands that, and that's the reason why they put more decision-making capability out of Asia for their future fortunes."

As GM looks to sell off majority control of its Opel division in Europe, the Detroit automaker will likely draw on lessons from its China operations, where it is partnered with Shanghai Automotive Industry Corp. and Wuling Motors, for managing its new relationship.

Microsoft Planning a 250GB Xbox 360 Bundle?

With not even a week having passed since Microsoft confirmed an Xbox 360 price cut and their intention to phase down their 360 models to just the Arcade and Elite, could they already be planning to introduce a new 360 model with even more hard drive space? According to listings from Amazon Germany and South African retailer BT Games, that may be a yes.

As XboxGaming reports (via Kotaku), a sales sheet from BT Games shows what they call a "Super Elite" 360 bundle, which comes with a 250GB hard drive and two wireless controllers packed in, for R4199.95 ($646). XboxGaming further reports that they confirmed with "local 360 distributor" Comztek that this bundle is indeed coming, along with one that also includes Turn-10's upcoming Forza Motorsport 3 as well.

All this comes only a day after Amazon Germany posted a listing for a new 360 bundle (again via Kotaku) that similarly comes with a 250GB hard drive, two controllers, and Forza 3.

Apple says it's not to blame for 'exploding' iPhones

image

Apple's iPhone may be the darling of the mobile-phone industry right now, but some users in France aren't singing its praises, claiming that the device explodes or cracks without warning.

However, after conducting an internal investigation into the cause of the broken touch-screen glass, Apple denies that there is an underlying iPhone flaw. In fact, Apple said that in all cases it investigated, some kind of force was applied to the iPhone, causing the glass to break, according to a BBC report Friday.

"The iPhones with broken glass that we have analyzed to date show that in all cases, the glass cracked due to an external force that was applied to the iPhone," Apple said in a statement cited by the BBC.

Last Tuesday, in response to a European Commission investigation into accusations of overheating and exploding iPhones, Apple referred to its internal investigation, saying, "We are waiting to receive the iPhones from the customers."

As part of its investigation, Apple also looked into complaints of the iPhone battery overheating but again said it found no problems. "To date, there are no confirmed battery-overheating incidents for iPhone 3GS, and the number of reports we are investigating is in the single digits," according to the statement.

Mega Millions Won in the Bronx

One lucky New Yorker just became $166.5 million richer.

The numbers for the Mega Millions $333 million jackpot were drawn Friday night, and two winning tickets had been purchased — one in the Bronx and the other in San Gabriel, Calif., according to lottery officials.

The face value of each ticket is an estimated $166.5 million, marking the largest payout for any winner in New York state.

The winning numbers are 1-17-31-37-54, and the Mega Ball is 31. Officials said the winning ticket from the Bronx was purchased at Fordham Grocery and Convenience Store on 38 West Fordham Road. The California ticket was purchased at Kim Ky Noodle on 1108 South San Gabriel Blvd.

As of Saturday afternoon, neither winner had stepped forward.

Tubar Palmer, 43, a neighborhood resident who is a regular at the convenience store in the Bronx, came in to check if he was the winner.

Store employees said it was not the first win at the store. In January, the store sold a $10,000 New York lotto ticket, and in both June and July, it sold “All the Money” winning tickets worth $20,000 each.

Michael Patel, a manager at Fordham Grocery and Convenience Store, said he sold at least $2,000 worth of tickets while working on Friday. Mr. Patel worked busily to put a sign up in the store’s window, announcing the win: "Mega Million winner here! 166 Million."

The jackpot began at $12 million in July and ballooned to $333 million after 14 draws with no one hitting all six numbers. Officials raised the jackpot from $325 million last week, the second-largest jackpot in Mega Millions history, after a spike in ticket sales.

The largest was a 2007 drawing for $390 million — the richest lottery payoff in United States history — split by two winners, one in Georgia and the other in New Jersey.

Dota’s new contender! the Heroes of Newerth

image

The new standalone Dota style of game, Heroes of Newerth (HON) is much faster gaining popularity since the earliest of last month…

HON amazingly standalone and is only available to play multiplayer online game. Its still maintaining the key element fron Dota. According to S2 the developer of HON, they already request the permission from icefrog to use the same element, +plus the location of the map and tower in the game follow exatcly the same as Dota..But this one is by far more clearer and more CGI effects compare to Dota..

Importantly the requirement for this game are moderate..the old system user out there who is a serious gamers sure wont regret playing this new game..

Apple Snow Leopard, Prob!

64-bit Snow Leopard defaults to 32-bit kernel

Apple's Snow Leopard operating system, released Friday, by default loads with a 32-bit kernel, despite running 64-bit applications.

While Mac OS X version 10.6 ships with a number of 64-bit native applications, the kernel itself defaults to 32-bit, unless the user holds down the "6" and "4" keys during boot time, at which point the 64-bit kernel is loaded. Only Apple's X-Serve products, using Snow Leopard Server, boot into a 64-bit kernel by default.

There appears to be no way within the GUI to make this change permanent, requiring the editing of the com.apple.Boot.plist file to make the change--a text-based configuration file. Users have already released applications to address this issue.

Older Macs with a 32-bit EFI chipset are prevented from loading the 64-bit kernel, although there are claims that this is an arbitrary decision by Apple rather than a technical concern, with a hack using the Chameleon boot loader devised to get around the lockout.

An older mid-2007 MacBook with a 32-bit EFI chip can't register the full 4GB RAM.

This raises another problem: if equipped with 4GB RAM, those with a 32-bit EFI chip are not capable of making use of the full amount. Our mid-2007 MacBook only showed 3GB available for system use through Activity Monitor despite having 4GB installed, not delivering the true 64-bit experience. Newer machines equipped with a 64-bit EFI chip running a 32-bit kernel seemed capable, with Activity Monitor reporting 3.75GB RAM available, as 256MB was put aside for the GeForce 9400M graphics chip.

It is unknown at this stage what sort of performance implications running 64-bit applications on a 32-bit kernel will have compared with a 64-bit kernel.

While a large portion of the OS has been optimized and updated, some applications, such as the DVD player, Front Row, Grapher, and iTunes are still 32-bit only, and some extensions are still run as a Universal Binary, despite the PPC architecture no longer being supported.

Apple also released Snow Leopard Server on Friday, but was unable to detail the reasoning behind dropping ZFS support for the operating system, a much-touted feature during the development stage.

Toyota recalls nearly 100,000 vehicles

The automaker says extremely cold temperatures can make it harder for drivers to slow down.

Toyota Motor (TM) said late Wednesday that it is recalling about 95,700 vehicles in 19 states because low temperatures can cause power-brake assist failures.

The recall involves 2009 and 2010 model year Toyota Corolla, Matrix and 2008 and 2009 Scion xD vehicles, all of which are equipped with 1.8-liter engines, the company said in a statement late Wednesday.

If an affected vehicle is operated in extremely low temperatures, ice may accumulate at the brake system port and decrease braking power, increasing the time it takes to stop the vehicle, the company said.

Megan Fox be the next Catwoman?

A British newspaper is reporting that the "Transformers" star has landed the role of the "Batman" nemesis.

image
Megan Fox might have clawed her way into the next "Batman" film.

The "Transformers" star has reportedly landed the role of Catwoman in the sequel to "The Dark Knight," according to British tabloid The Sun.

If it's true, she'll have big paws to fill. Michelle Pfeiffer and Halle Berry have both squeezed into the catsuit for the most recent big-screen incarnations of the DC Comics character.

Catwoman's alter ego Selina Kyle was originally portrayed as a supervillain, but more recent interpretations depict her as a possible love interest for Batman.

Fox certainly has the slinky, sultry looks to play a feline-inspired character, but does she have the presence? Production on the third film in the latest "Batman" franchise begins next year.
