We all are aware of how important sleep is for the overall health of the human body. Upon waking, we should feel alert and refreshed from a restful night's sleep. If this is not the case, it is very important to consider what the underlying cause is. Many times it is a sleep disorder that has gone unnoticed or untreated, leading to nights of unnecessary tossing and turning. It is not rocket science that we need sleep, but many take for granted their need for sleep and do not see how important sleep is to their health. So, why do we really need sleep? This is an excellent question, as there are many reasons why we need sleep. First and foremost, sleep energizes the human body, and the body’s ability to function well is affected by how much sleep one gets. During sleep the body is able to recuperate and heals itself uninterrupted. It is also known that when sleeping, the body is strengthened, so the body can fight off infection and diseases better. When the body lacks sleep, the immune system is weakened, and the body is susceptible to illnesses.

When it comes to good health habits, many focus on eating salads and whole-grain bread, working out and maybe even fitting in a massage. But how many make sleep a top health priority? There are many tips that are all helpful in preparing for a restful night's sleep, that are not at all time-consuming or costly. Quality sleep is proven to give you more energy, aid in stamina and keep the mind sharp and operating efficiently.

Just like having a workout routine, having a sleep routine is important. Having a set routine sends a signal to the brain that lets the body know it is time to settle down for the night.

Effects:
As important as establishing a sleep routine is, it is just as important to get the hours of uninterrupted sleep that the body needs. The body needs on average at least 7 hours of sleep daily. Most people skimp on sleep. You will be surprised by how much better you feel when you actually sleep the full 7 hours that your body needs.

As mentioned, sticking to a regular sleep routine is highly important, but with that it is helpful to include daily exercise, fresh air and limiting caffeine and alcohol consumption. Research shows that most people who regularly exercise experience fewer episodes of sleeplessness than people who don't exercise. This is partly because exercise helps the body transition between the phases of sleep more smoothly, since exercise has placed physical stress on the body, which signals the brain to call on the body to sleep in order to rest and repair. It is not 100 percent understood why fresh air causes the body to feel relaxed and more susceptible to sleep, but it does, and it is a free and natural way to aid in a restful night's sleep.

Lastly, it is wise to limit any drink or food that may have a stimulating affect on the body and cause it to remain revved up.
