Google to charge advertiser at Google Shopping

Silicon Valley / San Jose Business Journal September 10, 2012, 5:07am

Google Inc.'s decision to charge advertisers to display their products on the Google Shopping site may affect the way that consumers use the company's search engine while shopping online, according to the New York Times.

Mountain View-based Google (NASDAQ: GOOG) and Amazon.com Inc. increasingly overlap, as many use Amazon as a place to search while shopping, according to the report. Google's ecommerce adjustments are expected to decrease the number of items displayed there, which may send more customers to Amazon to search while shopping, the New York Times reports.

Google announced the change in its Google Shopping site in May and will require advertisers to pay to have their products shown there. The report says that many retailers, especially small businesses, are decreasing the number of products they list on the Google Shopping site due to the change and are concerned about how that will affect them in online visibility.
