BEIJING--Microsoft Corp. (MSFT) plans to hire 1,000 additional staffers in China and increase its investment in the fast-growing market by 15% in the current fiscal year, executives of the software giant said on Thursday.
The Redmond, Wash., company said the new staffers will added to its roughly 4,500 staffers there for the year ending June 30. The hiring will be spread across its research and development, sales and support arms, the company said.
The investment rise would be an increase on current spending of roughly half of US$1 billion, said Ya-Qin Zhang, chairman of the company's Asia-Pacific R&D group, who didn't offer more specifics.
The company also plans to renew its efforts to compete in the Chinese market for mobile devices, where it trails competitors such as Apple Inc. and Google Inc., whose Android operating system powers a significant share of smartphones there.
"We have a plan of attack and different offerings that will change the game," said Ralph Haupter, chairman and chief executive of Microsoft greater China region.
