Syncing & charging your iPhone with your Mac, PC or charging it directly from a AC outlet are all done with the little charger cable that comes with your Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) device.
This charging cable that works for the iPhone 3G, 4 and 4S might just go the way of the dinosaurs. Rumours of a new charging cable and charging pin on the upcoming iPhone 5 have been abound and just about every corner of the internet is talking about it. What many are now realizing is that this change will have huge implications.
Apple Inc (AAPL) will be the sole vendor for this particular accessory for quite a while. It stands to reason that it will be the only one supplying the cables and unlike the vast market that exists for the current cable, this will be a very small one.
Third party charging docks and cables for iOS devices are a lucrative market in themselves and they will definitely suffer until they catch up. The new dock adapter will cost $10 each with three available for $29. Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) will also be the only one supplying USB cables for charging and syncing at $19 each.
While it is understandable that Apple Inc (AAPL) alone will be able to supply the new accessories right after the launch, what’s troubling is that it might look as though Apple Inc will no longer be approving adapters and accessories made by third parties.
This is just a rumour for now but if it pans out, it means something very detrimental for companies that earn revenue from making and selling creative charging accessories and some $100 million in revenue if Apple Inc (NASDAQ:AAPL) chooses to sell at the $10 a piece price.
