Existence of Infinite Darkness

Excluding interference such as dust or fog, is there really such a thing as darkness so dark no light can penetrate it?

The problem with physics questions is that in order to answer them, you must ask physicists, whose firm grasp of the workings of the universe generally renders them unable to make sense of us nonphysicists.

What about things like dark matter or black holes?

"These are words, unhelpful language things. Those are things that are not giving off light. Something that doesn't give off light is dark. You can't see it, but it doesn't prevent light from traveling."

Some physicists, in fact, apparently can't even make sense of each other.

"Darkness so dark that light can't penetrate?" says Adam Riess, professor of physics and astronomy at Johns Hopkins University. "I would say that pretty much defines what a black hole is. It's gravity that is so strong, and it bends space so much, that light does not have a path out."
