On Monday, The Wall Street Journal reported that Yahoo’s discussions with Microsoft included the possibility of a joint advertising venture. The report intimated that Yahoo would take control of the company’s display advertising, while Microsoft would handle search advertising.
For the last year, rumors have circulated that Microsoft and Yahoo could join forces against Google (GOOG) to take back some of the companies’ market share in the online advertising sphere. Reports of a join venture began heating up after Microsoft made an unsuccessful bid to purchase Yahoo for more than $47 billion, much to Yahoo investors’ chagrin.
Yahoo’s new chief executive, Carol Bartz, and Microsoft CEO Steve Ballmer have reportedly discussed the types of commercial relationships that would be beneficial to the two companies moving forward, according to the Journal.
Currently, Yahoo retains a larger online search market share than Microsoft. While Yahoo holds 20.6%, Microsoft only holds 8%.
Later this week in the tech sector, Intel (INTC) is scheduled to report first quarter earnings on Tuesday, while Google is expected to report on Thursday.
