Apple on Tuesday announced an updated Xserve, which is now based on the Intel "Nehalem" Xeon processors with the new architecture.
Intel launched the new Xeon processors last week, calling its new Xeon 5500 the most important launch for the company since the Pentium Pro.
The 1U rack Xserve is available with one or two 2.93-GHz Intel Xeon processors, three channels of 1066-MHz DDR3 ECC memory, and up to 3 terabytes of solid-state internal storage, or SSDs. The new XServe also has three three external 3.5-inch drive bays that support both SATA and SAS drives. The external drives can expand the size of the internal storage.
The Xserve can deliver up to 89 percent better performance per watt, according to Apple. The company also said that it has improved the performance of the optional RAID card. The card can deliver up to 497 MB/s and supports RAID levels 0, 1 and 5. Apple also says its new XServe now runs cooler by using high efficiency power supplies that are reduce idle power by 19 percent.
Prices start at $2,999 for the XServe, and that includes an unlimited client license for Leopard Server 10.5 that supports Linux and Windows, and Macs. Xserve also includes several utilities, including iTunes, a Wiki Server, Podcast Producer, iCal Server, and CalDAV, a calendar server.
