Following a quiet world debut at February's Canadian International auto show in Toronto, Mazda holds the U.S. introduction of the 2010 CX-7 at the New York auto show.
The big news for Mazda's midsize crossover is the addition of a new entry level version featuring a 2.5-liter naturally aspirated four-cylinder engine with 161 hp and 161 lb-ft of torque. A five-speed automatic transmission is teamed with the base engine, which has already seen duty in the redesigned Mazda 6 and the Mazda 3. The entry level CX-7 will be offered only with front-wheel drive.
Pricing hasn't been announced for the new base model, but expect a healthy savings from today's $24,570 base price for the direct-injection turbocharged engine. The force-induced four-cylinder with 244 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque becomes the premium engine choice and will continue to be offered with front- and all-wheel drive.
All 2010 CX-7s benefit from a 5-percent increase in torsional rigidity to the body via the use of thicker materials, more weld bonds and additional reinforcements. These changes, together with retuned front and rear shock absorbers, provide improved ride comfort, handling and stability.
A restyled interior used higher-quality materials and sports a restyled dash with a new multi-information display, gauge cluster, door arm rests and steering wheel with integrated audio controls. Interior noise has been reduced with thicker insulation in both the cabin and engine compartment. A blind spot monitoring system is now available as an option.
Outside, the car wears Mazda's new company five-point grille and larger side air intakes on the revised front fascia. The rear bumper cover is also new. The Grand Touring trim adds new fog lamps.
