Facebook Inc(NASDAQ:FB) is not organizing the F8 conference this year. The firm has felt that their resources could be better utilized in building more tools for developers to get the most out of the platform. Also, App Dashboard and Open Graph still have a lot to do. Zuckerberg and his team would not rest unless every developer is using their software.
Facebook has declared a new API for the App Dashboard today that should ease a lot of developers. It is called the real-time updates API and it alters the real-time update capabilities that already existed in the Graph API. Developers will have to subscribe to change anything in the social graph. However, the new graph gets callbacks when a subscription is modified.
The latest API also comes with new options for creating and managing subscriptions. Subscriptions can be checked. Also, the validity of the subscriptions can be verified.
As soon as a subscribed change takes place, the site makes an HTTP post request to a callback URL specified, along with a list of changes.
Facebook reveals that the new API will make apps more reliable and reduce the loading times for users. Both of these things are crucial to the social network as it moves into the future of the firm. Investors require indications that Facebook is making money and apps are supporting it apart from advertising of the company. Facebook can continue to be successful if it keeps developers and users happy and content.
As explained by TNW back in August, the Graph API can be considered as a one-way ticket to Facebook’s heart. It is a hassle-free view of the social graph that reveals every detail including photos, people, events and pages. Similar to the field expansion enhancements that took place last month, this very announcement may seem slight to an average app user, however, slight improvements add up to something dramatic.
