Nokia Oyj (NOK) and Microsoft (MSFT) are expected to organize a high-profile launch for their joint venture of Windows Phone 8 based Smartphone’s codenamed “Phi” or Nokia Lumia 920 and Nokia Lumia 820, offered in a range of colours, according to the sources. At least one of them would feature “wireless charging” through docking station.
Rumors also say the Lumia 920 will have a 1.5GHz dual-core processor and a 4.5-inch display with a resolution of 1280 by 720 pixels. The Lumia 820 is expected to have a slightly smaller 4.3-inch screen, but the same resolution.
The Finland based phone maker is also expected to put an 8-megapixel camera in Lumia 920, and rebrand it PureView, a name first used in Nokia 808 running on Nokia’s own Symbian OS. Nokia 808’s PureView has a stunning 41 megapixels camera. Does a cameraphone really need to be 41 megapixels? To the disappointment of many, Nokia’s phones being launched today features 8 megapixels camera.
The mobile company did launch its Lumia 900 in New York in April, but had to halve the Windows Phone 7 smartphone’s price just three months later.
Nokia lost its 14 year’s dominant position as the world’s biggest phone-maker to Samsung in April, due to ever increasing losses, according to analysts.
Add it to 40,000 job cuts, a plan to shift all handset production to Asia, and the acknowledgement that sales of existing Lumia models have not been up to the mark, and it makes for a nervous start to Stephen Elop’s initial two years as the chief executive of a company with over 30,000 patents in its trove. Or it would have been a perfect excuse for Lord Sugar to tell Mr. Elop “You have been a Flop and you are fired”, if he was Lord Sugar’s “Apprentice” in BBC’s hit show.
Microsoft’s finances are in a good shape but the Software giant knows it has yet to set a mark in the Smartphone sector.
A recent study by analysts pointed that Windows Phone had only captured about 3% of the global market between April and June this year as compared to Google’s (GOOG) 68% and Apple Inc (AAPL) iOS’s 16%.
Microsoft’s willingness to co-host today’s event and the fact that Mr Elop is a former Microsoft star, who forged the agreement between two companies, means that Microsoft has invested hugely in Nokia’s success.
