On Tuesday, Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) was given a patent for a carbon fiber molding process that could be used to make parts made from the lightweight stuff in the future, like laptop casings or mobile device frames.
Apple’s US Patent No. 8,257,075 for a “Carbon composite mold design” shows the systems and techniques required for manufacturing “aesthetically pleasing” parts from carbon fiber and other alloys.
While the requests of carbon fiber composite materials are different, Apple (AAPL) specially notes that the creation can be used to make outer housings for a laptop computer or other products.
The patent might become a huge success as higher consumer demand has pushed the sector toward slim and smooth portables with comparatively strong large screens. For instance, the weight of the much-speculated next-generation iPhone’s predicted 4-inch screen could be compensated by a carbon fiber monocoque.
