As millions of U.S. kids return to school this week, new data declares that Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s iPad sales figures are greater than traditional computers to students and schools for the first time ever.
Needham & Company analyst Charlie Wolf said in a note to investors yesterday that the iPad is nowadays “cannibalizing” its PCs sales to the K-12 market. He also said that, without a doubt, a large part of iPad sales represented market growth.
Apple Insider further reported citing Charlie Wolf that, as a matter of fact, Mac sales remained steady at about 520,000 units but PC sales on the whole declined by 265,000 units from 1.90 million to 1.64 million units, the analysts think the indisputable conclusion is that the iPad is starting to eat away a significant portion of PC sales in this market.
For iPad, 2012 has been a high sales year. Apple Inc (AAPL) reportedly sold 20 million devices on record in the last quarter and during the starting three-month period of this year, iPad sales have already reached 11.8 million.
Apple Insider claims that the tablet is not only surpassing rival PCs in the education market, it is also selling in higher numbers as compared to Mac PCs. For the current quarter, twice the number of iPads have been sold as compared to Macs to students and schools. And Wolf considered it is not going to stop there.
He suggests this trend is expected to move into the home sector also. Wolf shared views while representing Needham that the education market is the canary in the coal mine and if the iPad is expected to influence any sector next, then it would be the much larger U.S. home market.
