Samsung, the world’s leading phone manufacturer, was found in the wrong of infringing on major Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) hardware design and software features.
Samsung was targeted by Apple because of its size, but every Android device maker now needs to think about possible coverage areas that could put them in the crosshairs as Apple attempts to hurt Android growth. Lengthy appeals process will surely be followed over the next many months. But for now, consumers will have to suffer the pain as devices potentially get more expensive and software changes start to move stealthily into their Android smartphones.
If appeals rulings support the first judgment, the current mobile ecosystem will seem very changed in one to two years. Many things including fundamental changes in the look and feel of non-Apple phone hardware, changes to the Android mobile operating system and potentially the emergence of a third popular mobile operating system, will lead this change.
