Microsoft & Nokia's big September 12 event!!

Both Microsoft and Nokia plan to hold a press conference on September 5 in New York to talk about Nokia’s Lumia brand of Windows phones. While Verizon not being expected a part of that event, the carrier plans to release a Nokia phone later. That would provide Nokia a new position at the top U.S. carrier, working on its very old relationship with No. 2 AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T).

Verizon is putting forth efforts to reduce its reliance on Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL)’s iPhone and devices running Google Inc (NASDAQ:GOOG)’s Android software, which lead the smartphone market. Temporarily, for Microsoft and Nokia, the step would increase efforts to recover market share. The Nokia phone would also give a new edge against the most recent iPhone, which is predicted to be launched on September 12.

Last month, a Nokia vice president spoke to the tech news website Neowin disclosing that Nokia’s Lumia Windows phones would soon be available on Verizon. It has sold 4 million Lumia phones across the world in the second quarter. Now it needs to sell five times that many per quarter in order to counteract the drop in its previous smartphone platform, Symbian, according to Needham’s Wolf.
