Google Inc. (GOOG)’s Android and Apple Inc. (AAPL)’s iOS both are the most popular smartphones in the U.S and are headquartered in Silicon Valley and both are globally recognized tech firms.
In U.S, 165m active iOS and Android devices alone are operated by users and Android is also the world’s biggest market for smartphone apps on these platforms. This figure of 165m is drawn from a study by mobile analytics firm Flurry.
This is not the end, but the mobile popularity and opportunities of Android is even well beyond the US for Android and iOS developers. This report by Flury was published earlier this week; the research is based on analytics data taken from 200k applications using Flurry’s tools. The top claim by mobile analytics firm Flurry is that there were more than 640m Android and iOS devices in use during July 2012.
Apple Inc. (AAPL) said in July 2012 that it had sold 410m iOS devices since the launch of its first iPhone’s in 2007, while Google Inc. (GOOG) revealed that it had activated 400m Android devices in June 2012, so both competitors are offering tough competition.
Further, it is revealed Flurry that iOS and Android active devices in July of 165mmade the US the largest market in the world in terms of combined usage of the platforms but it doesn’t split them out ahead of China’s 128m, South Korea’s 28m, the UK’s 31m, and Japan’s 22m.
If we think about the potential growth of both mobile platforms, Flurry chart maps its active-user estimates against the adult populations of each country to gauge how near to saturation they are which suggests that the US has 78% penetration of active iOS and Android devices, while the UK has 74%. Flurry estimates in a time span of a year, that net active devices in the U.S. grew by approximately 30 million, while China is exceeding more than 100 million new active devices entering the market.
