Alliances between Nokia & Microsoft benefited Comic Lovers

Nokia Corporation (NYSE:NOK) has jumped all-in with Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) with the Windows operating system for its smartphones, and that alliance has paid off in the comic world. Fans of the DC Comics franchise and movie trilogy, “The Dark Knight Rises,” who have Nokia Lumia phones and Windows Phone installed, will have an exclusive opportunity to download the Prologue app, which will show a exclusive motion comic that serves as a prologue to “The Dark Knight Rises” film. The application also will have sharing options with friends and links to other applications related to the movie.

DC Comics spokesperson Brandy Phillips said, “Nokia is a key promotional partner for The Dark Knight Rises film and also sponsored the production of Origins and Prologue apps so we have no plans to release the apps on other platforms at this time.”

Nokia Corporation (NYSE:NOK) handset users will have access to this. Those on iPhones by Apple Inc. (NASDAQ:AAPL) and devices running on Android by Google Inc. (NASDAQ:GOOG) are out of luck on this one. It would be then presumed that this application will be available on the new Lumia handsets that will run Windows Phone 8 by Microsoft Corporation (NASDAQ:MSFT) later this fall. As an extra little perk, Nokia and Windows users will also have access to the Origins app, which features comics in which all of the main characters made their inaugural appearances.

Either this is an opportunity that is a little late in coming to be effective, or this may help grow Nokia Corporation (NYSE:NOK) market share with the release of new Windows phones this fall – perhaps convincing some comic fans to switch to Nokia Lumia from other smartphone devices in order to utilize the applications. How big of a share of this market this is may not be known for a while, but the exclusivity of this opportunity may be a draw for comic fans who may be in the market for a smartphone in time for Christmas.
